Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Wisdom Provided by Voltaire.

"Unless a writer is extremely old when he dies, in which case he has probably become a neglected institution, his death must always be seen as untimely. This is because a real writer is always shifting and changing and searching. The world has many labels for him, of which the most treacherous is the label of Success."     Voltaire

  1. This is because a real writer is always shifting and changing and searching

I think this is true, though even some of the great writers might have felt that they were stagnating at various points in their lives, and churning out the same thing. It's interesting to follow the course of a creative person's life.

And maybe this is good advice for life itself too - not to be complacent and self-satisfied with who we are at any given point. Life is dynamic.

  2. It's amazing that some writers are able to do excellent, original and creative work even when so many other things in life are pulling at them.
